Tanka Bar
Native American Natural Foods creates a variety of yummy buffalo-based foods to support the residents of the Lakota reservation in Kyle, SD - one of the nation's most impoverished reservations. Their flagship product, the Tanka Bar, is a buffalo-cranberry energy bar based on traditional wasna and pemmican, and is the nation's first nationally distributed Native American food product. To celebrate the growth of the company and launch of several new products, including a buffalo-based hot dog, they needed an upgrade to their website - and they brought in the zen kitchen to help them.
The most important challenge facing the redesign of the Tanka site was creating a dynamic and professional-looking site while being respectful of the cultural values that informed the brand - something that founder/head designer Dani Nordin was well accustomed to, being of Native American descent. The site had to not only talk about the actual product, but it needed to share the unique story of the people behind the product. Using dynamic imagery and bold colors and shapes that stayed true to the cultural heritage of the Lakota, we were able to create a fantastic website that has already received positive feedback.
